Chair of Physics: Quantum Ordering at Extreme Conditions (Edinburgh)
This appointment is part of a major expansion in Physics at Edinburgh under the auspices of SUPA (Scottish Universities Physics Alliance)
Applications are invited for an established Chair of Physics to create and lead an experimental programme in quantum ordering at extreme conditions, based within the new Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions, CSEC (http://www.csec.ed.ac.uk). The new programme will build in part on existing experimental activity within CSEC by members of the Schools of Physics and Chemistry; on complementary theory activity within CSEC/School of Physics; and also on activities at the University of St Andrews with whom we collaborate within SUPA (Scottish Universities Physics Alliance).
The person appointed will be a scientist of world-class calibre, with a strong research record in experimental condensed matter physics or a closely allied field of physics or other physical science.
The University of Edinburgh is a member of SUPA (http://www.supa.ac.uk), a new trans-institutional alliance that creates a common strategy for physics research across Scotland. Among its several initiatives is one in Quantum Ordering at Extreme Conditions (QOEC). This funds two further academic appointments (and up to two fixed-term fellowships) at the University of St Andrews to work collaboratively alongside the Chair advertised here. We expect the QOEC initiative to be led from Edinburgh by the holder of this Chair. SUPA intends to build strong research teams within and across institutions. The salary will be in the professorial range. Interviews will be held on the 18th July 2005.
