Lectureship or Readership in Extreme Conditions (Edinburgh)

We seek to appoint to an academic position at Lectureship / Readership level in any area of experimental Extreme Conditions Physics. An appointment at Lectureship level may be fixed-term or permanent; a Readership appointment would be permanent. The person appointed will strengthen our activity in experimental extreme conditions physics, in any area that broadens and interacts with our existing programme, and will work within the overall programme of the new Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions, CSEC (http://www.csec.ed.ac.uk), a multi-disciplinary centre involving the Schools of Physics, Chemistry, Geosciences, Engineering and Electronics, and Biological Sciences. The successful candidate will have a strong research record in experimental condensed matter physics or a closely allied field of physics or other physical science. A strong background and experience in high-pressure (or high-density) research is preferable, but is not essential. For a permanent lectureship, clear evidence of the ability to lead a research programme is needed; appointment at Readership level requires an international scientific reputation and leadership record. A commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching is essential. The University of Edinburgh is a member of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA, http://www.supa.ac.uk), a new trans-institutional alliance that creates a common strategy for physics research across Scotland. Among its several initiatives is one on Quantum Ordering under Extreme Conditions (QOEC). An ability to create a link between our existing research and that of the new Chair in QOEC (concurrently advertised) may be an advantage. It is the intention of SUPA to build strong research teams within and across institutions; complementarity with existing SUPA staff and with others appointed (including the Chair) will be a criterion in the selection process. Applicants should specify, where applicable, any preconditions on the level of position they might accept.
