Reader/Lecturer/Advanced Fellow in Soft Matter, Biological or Statistical - Physics - at least two posts - New Nanocolloidal Materials Initiative (Edinburgh)
We seek to appoint up to two permanent academics at Lectureship and/or Readership level and a fixed term Advanced Fellow. All posts are open to both experimentalists and theorists (including simulators). In combination with a new Chair in Chemical Physics of Complex Systems, those appointed will strengthen our activity: (i) in colloid physics, particularly the area of nanocolloids; (ii) in physics at the interface with complex biological systems (gene networks, bacteria, ecology, etc.); (iii) in simulation and/or statistical mechanics of complex and/or soft matter systems. You will have a strong research record in soft matter, biological, or statistical physics. For a permanent lectureship, clear evidence of the ability to lead a research programme is needed; appointment at Readership level requires an international scientific reputation and leadership record. A commitment to excellence in undergraduate teaching is essential for both academic posts.
The University of Edinburgh is a member of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA, http://www.supa.ac.uk), a new trans-institutional alliance that creates a common strategy for physics research across Scotland. Among its several initiatives is one on New Nanocolloidal Materials. An ability to contribute to this initiative may be advantageous for one of the permanent posts. The SUPA Advanced Fellowship (SAF) is tenable for up to four years, and is to work on the Nanocolloids project with teams across Scotland. (It is possible that no SAF will be appointed, if a person qualified for this cross-institutional role is selected instead for a permanent post.) SAFs are primarily research posts with only limited teaching, e.g. within in SUPAs new Scotland-wide Graduate School.
It is the intention of SUPA to build strong research teams within and across institutions; complementarily with existing SUPA staff and with others appointed (including the Chair) will be a criterion in the selection process. Applicants should specify, where applicable, any preconditions on the level of position they might accept.
