CASE Studentship - Novel gas sensor for combustion control

This is an exciting opportunity to work with the Microscale Sensors Group at UWS and SST Sensing Ltd, a Scottish sensor company specialising in the design and manufacture of sensors for domestic, industrial and aerospace applications.

For many years gas sensors have been used in combustion control systems ensuring the optimum use of energy and the reduction of harmful emissions in exhaust gases. Typically, the technology used in sensor manufacturing processes is costly in terms of the component parts and the amount of production effort required. This project will explore a novel approach to the design, construction and application of a novel gas sensor where considerable savings can be made facilitating new affordable products and the efficient use of increasingly valuable energy resources.

Proposal
The student will work in the Microscale Sensors group at UWS and periodically at the company where he/she will develop skills in the underlying physical and chemical principles of gas sensor design. The student will develop a new sensor concept and ultimately oversee the transfer of the technology into a marketable product.

This project is funded through a CASE studentship from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Funding Notes
The PhD Scheme will offer the following benefits:

- A stipend in the region of £16,000 per annum for 3 three and a half years.
- Exemption from the payment of annual fees  ... more
