SUPA is the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance, a strategic alliance of eight Physics Schools with a shared strategy for research with funding from the Scottish Funding Council (SFC). Our members are the Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt, St Andrews, Strathclyde and West of Scotland.

Launched in 2004 with the aim of placing Scotland at the forefront of research in physics through co-ordinated promotion and pursuit of excellence, SUPA has been highly successful in establishing Scotland as a recognised international leader in research and advanced post-graduate training in physics.

SUPA is a community of over 1200 physicists (academics, research staff and post-graduate students) across Scotland.

Professional Internships

PIPS are three-month professional internships in a non-academic setting. They are a compulsory part of the WestBio training programme. The PIPS will provide students with work experience in a professional setting (often non-scientific) that does not relate directly to the PhD work. These aim to provide BBSRC funded PhD students with the opportunity to carry out a non-academic work experience placement during their PhD.

Such experience is important both to help early career researchers understand the context of their research and to expose them to the range of opportunities available to them after they graduate. A wide variety of career paths are open to researchers and the ability to move between different roles and sectors can be key to maximising the impact from your PhD training, as well as to achieving a successful and fulfilling career.

For further information contact the PIPS Manager mvls-pips@glasgow.ac.uk or visit PIPS page.
